Dr. David Doty has been named the 2013 recipient of the Lifepoint Hospitals Physician Leadership Award.

The award is presented to a deserving physician at one of LifePoint’s 61 hospitals across the country, who demonstrates an uncompromising commitment to quality care, effective leadership among fellow physicians, dedication to community support, and a commitment to cost effective healthcare, according to Meadowview Regional Medical Center Director of Marketing Angie Calland.

According to Doty, winning the award was “a total surprise.”

“I had no idea I was getting an award,” Doty said. “I was told I was going for [someone else]. So, they kind of blind-sided me. But, I am very honored and thankful to have won.”

Doty was born in Massachusetts, where he lived for seven years, before moving to Indianapolis and continuing his education. He went to college in Kansas and medical school at the University of Bio Sciences in Missouri. He completed his residency in Dayton and was a part of the Health Professionals Scholarship Program through the U.S. Army.

“After completing my residency, I knew I owed three years to the Army,” he said. “So I was at the Columbus Air Force base from 1980-1983.”

Doty said he had previously worked alongside Dr. Donald Wilson, who was returning to Maysville. Wilson asked Doty to “take up the small town life.”

“I arrived in October 1983,” he said. “When I first arrived, I couldn’t believe the town was. But, I’ve enjoyed the last 30 years or so I’ve been here. I couldn’t think of a better place to have spent the years.”

Doty has now worked as a physician for Meadowview Regional Medical Center for more than 30 years. He has held positions as chief of staff, chair of the OB/GYN department and as a member of the board of trustees. As one the physicians for the OB/GYN department, Doty has delivered more than 7,000 babies, according to Calland.

Also in that time, Doty has contributed to more than $4 million in renovations of Meadowview. Amongst those renovations were restructurings of the labor and delivery rooms and the post-partum recovery suites.

“Dr. Doty is an integral member of our hospital team and our community,” said Meadowview Regional Medical Center Chief Executive Officer Robert Parker. “He is the embodiment of great physician leadership. We are so proud to see his dedication to his patients and colleagues and his legacy of care honored in this way.”
