FLEMINGSBURG –A recent inspection has resulted in a weight load reduction for the Simon Kenton Memorial Bridge, officials with the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet said Monday.
Failure to reduce the load the bridge carries could result in closures, officials said.
The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet has posted a 3-ton weight limit on the bridge (U.S. 62) over the Ohio River in downtown Maysville.
Recent inspections by KYTC contractors found damage to the bridge’s cable suspension system, which prompted the change. The bridge had been posted at 20, 23, 25 and 37 tons, depending on axle type.
“Two damaged cables were found in the recent KYTC-contracted inspection – the full inspection we conduct on the bridge every two years – and is what prompted the weight limit change.,” said KYTC spokesperson Allen Blair.
While the bridge is not in any immediate danger, engineering analysis shows the reduced weight limit is needed as a traffic safety precaution and to prevent possible further damage until the structure can be repaired, officials said. A timetable for repairs has yet to be determined.
The cabinet has informed authorities on both sides of the river – Kentucky State Police, Ohio Highway Patrol, Maysville Police Department, and others – who will be enforcing the weight limit, effective immediately.
Vehicles over 3 tons, which includes most commercial trucks and vehicles other than passenger cars and trucks, are now prohibited to cross the US 62 bridge. All prohibited vehicles should detour using the William H. Harsha Bridge (U.S. 68) three miles west of Maysville to connect between Kentucky and U.S. 52 or U.S. 62 in Ohio.
The Transportation Cabinet asks for the public’s assistance in obeying the new weight limit. If it is not adhered to, the bridge might have to be closed until repairs can be made.
