Candy Cane is a mature guy who knows how to accessorize! When Cane’s owner was no longer able to care for him, he surrendered him to the shelter so he could get the care he needed and move on to a more suitable home. This boy walks easily on a leash and listens very well. Treats motivate him greatly! He is affectionate and cuddly. We believe he may also be house-trained, as he keeps his kennel clean. He previously lived with another dog but has been picky about his dog friends at the shelter. We believe he would do best as your one and only loyal canine companion.

Cane has become a long timer at the shelter, meaning he has been in shelter custody for over 6 months. The shelter team does their best to keep him comfortable and happy, but nothing beats the comfort of a loving, fur-ever home. If you are interested in adopting Cane, scan the QR code beside his picture and apply to adopt him now!

As much as dogs enjoy playing in the snow, it comes with risks. According to Zoetis Petcare, playtime in the snow should be limited to 30 minutes to avoid the risk of hypothermia and frostbite. If your dog starts to shiver while outside, bring them inside immediately as this may be a sign of impending hypothermia. Older dogs like Cane and dogs with thin fur are most at risk for ill effects of the cold and may need a jacket to help keep them warm. It is crucial to keep antifreeze away from your pets, as it is toxic. Do not let them lick salt off roadways or sidewalks as it may also be toxic to your pets. You may also want to consider buying your dog booties with tread to help avoid slips on ice that may injure them. MCAS needs more volunteers and foster homes! You can foster a dog for as long as you like — a few hours, a “Doggo Day Out,” a weekend, a few weeks, or longer. Volunteers can help in many ways, including walking dogs, grooming/bathing dogs, helping with playgroups, transporting, or helping at meet-and-greet events out in the community. If you want to become an MCAS volunteer and/or fosterer or sponsor a dog’s adoption fees, please call the shelter at 606-564-6067 or email animalshelter@masoncountykentucky.us.

Visit and follow the shelter’s Facebook page for more information on all available dogs, the volunteer program, foster programs, and upcoming events at https://www.facebook.com/masoncountyanimalshelter.
