November is National Senior Pet Month. This month, shelters across the country are highlighting their adoptable senior pets. Senior pets are perfect for adopters who are looking for calm, loyal, and loving fur-ever friend! Mason County Animal Shelter has two wonderful senior dogs available for adoption, foster, or rescue now: Candy Cane and Pops. Both are sponsored and have $0 adoption fee for approved adopters.
Candy Cane is a mature guy who deserves to live his golden years in comfort! When Cane’s owner was no longer able to care for him, he surrendered him to the shelter so he could get the care he needed and move onto a more suitable home. This boy walks easily on a leash and listens very well. Treats motivate him greatly! He is affectionate and cuddly. We believe he may also be house-trained, as he keeps his kennel clean. He previously lived with another dog but has been picky about his dog friends at the shelter. We believe he would do best as your one and only loyal canine companion.
Pops, the shelter’s longest resident. The shelter team is not giving up on him finding his happily ever after! His shelter auntie Mandy Halstead says this about Pops: “When you Google ‘good boy’ we are pretty sure Pops’ face is the first thing that pops up! He is a strikingly handsome black lab mix who loves everyone and has never met a stranger. While he may be an older gentleman and is considered special needs, he still has a ton of spunk and even more love to give to the perfect family. Pops enjoys walks, belly rubs, and naps but car rides are his favorite!”
Pops came to the shelter because he was neglected and had to have his tail amputated due to injury and infection. Because of this injury, he has trouble holding his bowel movements. He feels his best and has fewer accidents when he is fed sensitive-stomach dog food with probiotic powder added. Despite all he has been through, this boy is easy-going, good with other dogs, and wonderful with children.
If you are interested in fostering or adopting Cane or Pops, scan the QR code beside their picture to learn more and complete the adoption application. You may also come to the shelter and apply in person. Please consider giving them a loving home!
Adoption Information
All dogs adopted from Mason County Animal Shelter are spayed and neutered, microchipped, vaccinated, dewormed, and treated with flea and tick preventatives. Adoption fees are half-priced thanks to the EnviroFlight Fur-ever Home Adoption Sponsorship Program! Adult dog adoption fees are $40, and puppy adoption fees are $60! One generous individual is willing to pay the adoption fee for a veteran to adopt a dog of their choice. Tom and Gail Wise have generously sponsored adoption fees for Pops and several dogs who have been adopted. Sponsors for the adoption fee for any of the shelter’s dogs are welcome! Contact the shelter for information!
Prospective adopters need to fill out a short application online or at the shelter for adoption approval. MCAS needs more volunteers and foster homes! You can foster a dog for as long as you like; a few hours, a “Doggo Day Out,” a weekend, a few weeks, or longer. Volunteers can help in many ways, including walking dogs, grooming/bathing dogs, helping with playgroups, transporting, or helping at meet-and-greet events out in the community. If you want to become an MCAS volunteer and/or fosterer or sponsor a dog’s adoption fees, please call the shelter at 606-564-6067 or email animalshelter@masoncountykentucky.us.
