Wagging Tales from Mason County Animal Shelter

in

Frank the Tank is a favorite of the shelter team and volunteers! This boy is extremely friendly with people, is affectionate, and cuddly. He gives big, sloppy kisses and enjoys being near a person. This guy is very treat-motivated and even talks to you! He is intelligent, highly trainable, and already knows “sit,” “speak,” and possibly other commands. He is also playful and loves to run around the play yard with toys! He loves the older children that visit the shelter. He is also easy to walk on a leash using a harness. A bonus is – he seems to be 100% housetrained! He only does his business outside and keeps his kennel clean!

Frank was discovered as a stray in Maysville, with no known background. So far, Frank is selective with his dog friends. He likes his space, and we respect that. Because of this, he may do best as the only dog in his adoptive home. He will be a loyal companion! If you can provide a loving home for our Frank, scan the QR code beside his picture to learn more and complete the adoption application now!

Mason County Animals Shelter maintained no-kill status in 2024, according to Best Friends Animal Society’s annual data report https://bestfriends.org/no-kill-2025/animal-shelter-statistics. This means Mason County Animal Shelter saved 90% or more of the dogs that entered last year, with an exceptional 96% live outcome rate for the year. This is the third year in a row the shelter has received no-kill status recognition.

Achieving and maintaining no-kill status has been a true team effort. Mason County Animal Shelter staff, volunteers, and local non-profit Rock 4 Rescue have worked together since 2022 to drastically improve shelter operations. Thanks to this partnership, all shelter dogs receive preventative healthcare, spay/neuter surgeries, and microchipping. The shelter’s Volunteer and Fostering programs ensure the adoptability and wellbeing of the dogs in care, providing the

dogs with daily enrichment, including walks, grooming, and playgroups. Volunteers and Rock 4 Rescue hold adoption events in the community and work to educate the public on the importance of spay/neuter. Rock 4 Rescue has been funding community pet spay/neuter surgeries, as their funds allow. The adoption rate for dogs brought into the shelter in 2024 was 37%. The shelter has also partnered with dozens of reputable non-profit rescue organizations in the region. In 2024, 43% of the dogs admitted to the shelter were transferred to rescue partner organizations.

The shelter is dependent upon county funds, grants, and donations to continue this momentum.
