Fundraiser for pencil sharpener coming to a close

VANCEBURG — An online fundraiser made by a Lewis County Central Elementary School teacher to fund an electric pencil sharpener for her class is soon coming to a close.

Sarah Kelly, kindergarten teacher for Central Elementary said she posted a donorschoose.org fundraiser for a new pencil sharpener at the beginning of the school year. With her students learning how to write in her class, Kelly said the need of a well-functioning sharpener is relatively high.

My kindergarten students are very lovable and energetic,” Kelly said on the fundraiser’s page. “They love learning to write their name and correspond with family members and friends through notes and letters. Parents and grandparents enjoy receiving these mementos from their children and family.”

According to Kelly, pencil sharpening, especially among kindergarten students, is a ‘hot commodity,’ which usually ends up with her class going through multiple electric sharpeners due to intensive use.

Kelly got the idea to create a page on the Donors Choose website from an art teacher from Central Elementary who uses the site regularly.

To Kelly, students learning to write at such an early age is crucial, not only because it helps them gain these skills when they are older, but also when learning to write is made into an entertaining experience it encourages the students to write as well.

“It’s very important, especially in kindergarten, because they are just starting to write,” she said.

Currently, the fundraiser is attempting to receive $197 in donations toward the purchase of an electric pencil sharpener, with only $50 having been raised for the product.

The deadline for the fundraiser is Friday, Dec. 7.
