Rosenwald’s May’s Lick Negro School, under the administration of the Mays Lick Development Community has had an eventful year.
We were recipients of a Hayswood Foundation Matching grant and on March 5, 2018, the school was listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places. In celebration of the achievements for this year the final fundraising activity for 2018 will be held Saturday, Nov. 3 at the school and the May’s Lick Community Center. A yard sale will be held at the school from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and a fish fry and chili supper will be held at the Community Center from 11:30 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Since 2007, when the May’s Lick Development Community began administrative oversight of the Rosenwald Negro School, over $132,000 has been raised (either in funds or in kind services) through grants, donations from local businesses, the Mason County Fiscal Court, private donations and various fund raising activities. The chart below provides insight on the monies received/used for restoration of the school.

The members of May’s Lick’s Development Community – 501(3)(c) and volunteers who have worked to restore the school for future use as a community center express our appreciation for the generous donations made through the recent letter campaign. The monies raised through the campaign will be matched via the Hayswood Foundation Grant and will be used toward our long term goal.
The achievement of our goal, establishing a community center which will include a satellite library, a gallery on the history of African American education in the area, multiuse space and a small café, will not be possible without the strong support of our community and we look forward to your participation at our Nov. 3 event.
