FRANKFORT — Another candidate has entered the race for the Kentucky House 70th District seat being vacated by current Rep. John Sims Jr.
William Lawrence of Maysville, a Republican who describes himself as “a conservative small businessman from Maysville,” announced his candidacy for the district which serves Bracken, Fleming, Mason and Robertson counties, on Tuesday.
“I’ve spent my career working to create jobs and opportunities for families in our area,” Lawrence said. “For too long, our communities have lacked a strong advocate in Frankfort to fight for our values. I will work every day as state representative to stand up for conservative principles and fight for the values that will help our communities grow and prosper.”
After losing his job in 2013, and with a second child on the way, Lawrence and his wife, April decided to use what little savings they had at the time to start a small business. Since 2015, he said, they’ve grown the company into a local leader in real estate.
Lawrence’s company has restored historic buildings in the community, including the Merz Bros,/Kline’s building in downtown Maysville.
“My story is a Kentucky story,” Lawrence concluded.”I know what it’s like to struggle, overcome and succeed. Now, I’m asking voters to put their faith in me so I can take my work ethic and vision to Frankfort,” Lawrence said.
Lawrence becomes the second candidate and first Republican to enter the race. Craig Miller of Augusta filed for the seat in November as the lone Democrat to file so far.
Deadline to file to become a candidate is Jan. 28. 2020.
