An early morning accident in Lewis County Sunday left the drivers of both vehicles involved, according to news reports.

The accident took place just after midnight on Kentucky 8, east of the Black Oak Industrial Park, reports indicate.

According to information from Sheriff Johnny Bivens, deputies who answered the call determined Kathy G. Hardy, 65, of Vanceburg, was eastbound on Kentucky 8 in a 2015 Honda Civic and Arica J. Jarrells, 37, of Vanceburg, was traveling west in a 2008 Nissan Versa when the vehicles hit head-on.

Hardy and Jarrells were both pronounced dead at the scene by Amanda Gaydos, Lewis County deputy coroner.

An accident reconstructionist with Kentucky State Police made a determination during a preliminary investigation that the Honda had crossed the center line and struck the Nissan, Bivens said.

The roadway was closed at the scene for nearly eight hours to allow for investigators to complete their work and for wreckage to be cleared.

Assisting at the scene, along with Bivens, were Deputy Jason Bryant, Deputy Taylor Martin, Deputy Dennis Brown, Deputy Coroner Amanda Gaydos, Portsmouth Ambulance, Black Oak Fire and Rescue, Lewis County Fire and Rescue.

Gaydos said both victims were scheduled for autopsies at the State Medical Examiner’s Office in Frankfort.

The collision remains under investigation by KSP Trooper Jason Brown.
