After picking up the win over Augusta in the semifinal round, the Mason County Lady Royals returned to the field at Bracken County to take on the Lady Bears in the 39th District softball championship game.
In the regular season, the Lady Royals and Lady Bears had only seen each other once. Bracken County took that game 14-2 in just five innings, something the Lady Bears hoped to repeat on their way to reclaiming the 39th District crown. Despite their loss to Bracken County earlier in the season, Mason County entered the tournament as back-to-back champions and were eager for their shot at a three-peat.
After strong defensive performances from both teams in the first inning, Reagan Workman made it to first on a line drive and an error from Jordan Ahrens at third base to start the top of the second. After a pop out from Olivia Hughes to Ella Burton at second and a line out from Sydney Ullery to Jenna Colvin at center field, Kylah Thomas reached first on an error from Kyndall Johnson, advancing Workman to third.
Workman then made it home on a wild pitch, allowing Mason County to take the lead 1-0 heading into the bottom half of the inning. The Lady Royals’ 1-0 lead remained until the top of the fourth, where Delana Rigg picked up a double to start the inning, followed by a home run from Workman over the fence in center field, extending the Lady Royals’ lead to 3-0.
Bracken County got on the board in the bottom of the fifth, following a single from Marleigh Randolph, and a home run over the fence in left field from Kyndall Johnson. The Lady Bears moved into the top of the sixth trailing 3-2, hoping to get out ahead of Mason County late in the contest.
The Lady Royals picked up just one hit in the sixth inning before making short work of the Lady Bears’ batters in the bottom half-inning. Another strong showing from both team’s defenses in the seventh allowed no runs to either team, allowing Mason County to pick up the win 3-2 over the Lady Bears, taking home their third consecutive 39th District championship.
Following this game, both teams will return to the field next week for the 2026 10th Region softball tournament, also hosted at Bracken County.
Bracken County will take the field Monday, May 25 at 10 a.m. against the Bishop Brossart Lady ‘Stangs. Later that day, Mason County is scheudled to take on the Campbell County Lady Camels at 4 p.m.
