He was what many refer to these days as “one of one.”
Gary Kidwell, a man who wore numerous hats during his 82 years as a proud Lewis Countian, passed away on Saturday.
After reading the extremely well-written piece from Lewis County Herald publisher Dennis K. Brown on Kidwell’s life published this past Wednesday in the Ledger Independent, there isn’t a lot I can add, but I just wanted to say he was truly a legend in this area.
He loved Lewis County and all of the school’s sports teams, University of Kentucky athletics, the Cincinnati Reds, the Cincinnati Bengals, and his alma mater, Morehead State University, with all his heart.
Gary had a real passion for sports and the young people in Lewis County, to say the very least. The only aspect of his life more important than following sports was his love for his family, and heartfelt condolences go out to his wife Alice of 61 years, and daughters Stacy Kidwell and Tai Kidwell Heineman, and his grandchildren.
I met Gary when I began writing about sports at a rather advanced age, and he was always interested in what I had to say. He was truly a kind and cordial person, and he will be dearly missed by all who knew him.
The following feature story appeared in the Ledger Independent a little more than 20 years ago, when Gary invited me to his home and shared his lifelong love for sports with me.
It was a pleasure getting to know him over the years, and reading his column in the Lewis County Herald, and listening to his Saturday morning sports show on WKKS were absolute musts.
