HIGH SCHOOL CROSS COUNTRY

Saturday’s meet in Paris at the Hopewell Invitational for the Mason County girls’ cross country team was an important one.

It’s the site of the KHSAA state cross country meet come the final weekend in October.

If Saturday was any indicator, the Lady Royals look to be in good shape, winning the meet on Saturday with four of their top runners in the top 31 spots and winning the meet by eight points over Lafayette.

The Lady Royals had a total of 113 points and were led by Layla Henderson’s third place finish in a time of 19:25. Henderson was followed by Paige Decker in 12th (20:20), Alyssa Bisotti in 18th (20:54) and Elizabeth Lavinder in 31st (21:38).

Jennifer Buttery claimed the fifth and final scoring spot for the Lady Royals in 67th (22:54). Kynedee Mauney finished 87th (24:02) and Kolby Galloway 93rd (24:27).

The girls’ meet had 149 runners and 18 teams. It featured four of the top five cross country teams in Class AA, according to Mason County coach Mark Kachler. Lafayette is one of the top 10 Class AAA teams in the state. An impressive showing for a Lady Royals team looking to make their fourth straight podium finish (top four) at the state meet and a 10th regional title in the last 14 years.

The Royals finished 17th in the boys’ meet. They were led by DeShawn Overley in 95th with a time of 19:35. Peyton Ullery finished 106th (20:07), Jackson Truesdell 114th (20:58), Keenan Galloway 139th (23:15) and Casey Magee 149th (24:17).
