Becoming a foster for Mason County Animal Shelter will have a tremendous impact on the lives of the dogs you foster and helps the shelter team to save more lives! Recently, fosters stepped up to help two special dogs in need, Mildred and Sadie.
A Good Samaritan brought Mildred to the shelter on Thursday, 5/22/2025. They said she had been at their home for over a week, and they could not locate her owner. Mildred’s nails were overgrown, her backside was matted, and at only 18 pounds, she was noticeably pregnant and panting hard. Shelter Director Brandy Thomas knew she was starting labor and reached out to this author to foster. There was no way my husband Sam and I would say no to this girl! A noisy, crowded shelter is no place for a momma to give birth!
Late Friday 5/23/2025 evening, Mildred started giving birth to her puppies. This small girl ended up having 6 puppies in total, 3 boys and 3 girls. Mom and babies are all doing well! We are reaching out to rescue groups to accept them. Meanwhile, they are safe and secure in foster care.
Next is Sadie’s story. Sadie showed up on Orangeburg Road in Maysville a few weeks ago and may have been dumped there. Barbie and Jack Davis had been feeding her, and their granddaughter Kinley named her Sadie. She would eat out of their hands but if you tried to pet or grab her, she would run. She had a hiding spot in a culvert along the road. Everyone was concerned she would be hit by a car.
The Animal Control Officer responded to the area multiple times and could not find her. Finally, they did see her on Friday, 5/23 but she was too smart to be caught. Efforts over an hour and a half to catch her were unsuccessful. Mason County Animal Shelter volunteers went
out again on Saturday and again, were unsuccessful in catching her. A live trap was set up at Davis’s home and they agreed to watch it.
Finally, Saturday evening, she was caught in the live trap! Volunteer Barb Bern immediately responded, bringing this beautiful girl home to foster. Barb is working with Sadie to gain her trust. She is very scared and skittish. We hope she will return to being a happy and playful puppy soon! She is available for rescue only until she comes out of her shell. Please watch the shelter Facebook page for updates.
Mason County Animal Shelter has saved over 100 dogs’ lives so far in 2025. These are just 2 stories, and unfortunately, many more will follow. If you are interested in making a difference in the lives of our county’s unwanted dogs through fostering or volunteering, please go down to the shelter to sign up! It is rewarding in so many ways and makes a positive difference in the lives of the shelter dogs!
