WALLINGFORD — Less

than a month after announcing a plan to use a Lewis County private

kennel for Fleming County stray dogs, officials had to scramble for

a different location.

Following an

announcement in January that Fleming County would no longer be able

to use the services of the Mason County Animal Shelter, Fleming

officials believed they had located an alternate kennel

.

According to

officials, Sandy’s Pampered Pets and Boarding was willing to take

on the responsibility of caring for the dogs, at the came cost, $5

per dog for up to five days and euthanasia cost of $20.

The plan fell through

and a request for another location brought two identical offers to

Fleming County Fiscal Court, Tuesday.

Lewis County Animal

Shelter and Fleming Rescue both offered to care for dogs brought to

their facilities, at a cost of $10 per dog for up to five days and

$20 for euthanasia.

Fleming Rescue,

operated by Tim and Stephanie Stamper, was selected to receive the

county contract.

Location in

Wallingford, was the deciding factor, conserving gas and time for

taking dogs to the shelter, officials said.

Fleming County Dog

Warden Andy Allen is still responsible for picking up strays and he

should be called to do so, officials said.

“Once the dogs have

been brought here and stay five days, the legal requirement for the

county, they become the property of Fleming Rescue to put up for

adoption and to send on to other rescues,” Stephanie Stamper

said.

Allen is already

coordinating with FR and said the facility is a good

thing.

“They are on top of

it and are going to have a clinic open up too,” Allen

said.

According to Stamper,

FR has aligned itself with veterinarian Leah Neuhausen and will be

using her services for spay and neuter, in addition to care of

shelter dogs.

“We have the shelter

at the kennel at our home, the clinic is on Kentucky 32,” Stamper

said. “We also have two full time staff who are bathing and caring

for the dogs while they are here.”

Fleming Rescue also

accepts surrendered dogs, but has a policy concerning drop-off of

litters of puppies.

According to FR

officials there is a requirement for the mother of any litters

taken to the shelter to be spayed and a cost of $45 to have the

procedure done. Appointments to have the mother spayed will be made

the day pups are surrendered.

Adoption of shelter

dogs is encouraged and FR requires all adopted dogs to be spayed or

neutered; adoption fees cover the cost, rabies vaccination and

county dog tags, officials said.

Shelter hours are 8

a.m. – 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, at 2450 Ryan Road,

Wallingford.
