Peyton Dunaway, new editor at the Ledger Independent

The Ledger Independent is excited to welcome its new editor, Peyton Dunaway, to the team.

Dunaway recently graduated from Transylvania University, majoring in Writing, Rhetoric and Communications and minoring in History. During her time at the university, Dunaway wrote and reported for Transylvania’s student-led publication, The Rambler, where she gained experience in journalism and copy editing.

She was also nominated for a staff position at the university’s student Writing Center, where she worked throughout her junior and senior year. At the Writing Center, which is an organized space for students to work on and seek assistance with their assignments, Dunaway assisted peers with a wide variety of writing-related tasks, from essays to speeches to presentations. During her final winter semester, Dunaway was a course-embedded consultant (CEC) for a freshman research seminar class, where she helped new students organize and write their first full-length research papers.

Dunaway grew up in Elizabethtown, Kentucky and recently moved to Maysville to take on her new role as editor for the Ledger Independent. While still learning, Dunaway is excited to settle in and expand her knowledge of the area.

“I think just getting in touch with the community is very important to me,” Dunaway stated. “Since I’m not originally from here, it’s difficult to have a position so involved with the community and be a stranger to it at the same time.”

She went on to elaborate that her first goal as editor is to get more involved with Maysville and the surrounding areas so that she can represent the community “fairly and honestly” to the best of her ability.

Dunaway described her struggles with job searching, explaining that it can be difficult to know what job you will end up with when you are fresh out of college. However, she is glad to be working as an editor. Because Transylvania does not offer a journalism major, her college major allowed her to learn and experiment with various forms of writing, including long-form academic papers, persuasive writing, poetry and playwriting. She feels that becoming the editor for the Ledger Independent will allow her to continue interacting with different aspects of writing and culture while developing her professional skills.

When asked what her long-term plans are, Dunaway explained that she could see a number of futures for herself. She is most interested in pursuing publishing or historical research/writing, but for now, she is excited to see where her new adventure as the Ledger’s editor takes her.

In her free time, Dunaway likes to appreciate and participate in artistic endeavors. She enjoys listening to music, writing, theater (watching or participating), reading and the occasional video game.
