FLEMINGSBURG — The Fleming County Sheriff’s Golf Scramble raised over $3,000 for the Kentucky Sheriff’s Association.
Fleming County Sheriff Tim Smith said the money raised through donations and sponsorship of the golf scramble goes to help support the Kentucky Sheriff’s Boys and Girls Ranch.
“This is something that has been done every year but this is the first time the actual sheriff’s office has been involved in it. We raised $3,040. Each year the Sheriff’s Boys and Girls Ranch holds a camp and it is free of charge for usually a couple of kids per county,” Smith said.
According to Smith the Kentucky Sheriff’s Association consists of 120 counties that send kids between ages 8-11 years old to the boys and girls ranch throughout the summer.
“Each sheriff’s office gets to bring a couple of kids per county, it’s split up into different weeks throughout the summer,” he said.
The first week that was available Smith said they could have taken three boys to the camp (the ranch, run as a summer camp) but did not have a third option so ended up taking two. The week of July 4, they were only able to take one girl as a couple of the kids decided against going.
“The kids got to participate in the camp free of charge for them. These are kids who do not typically get the opportunity to take vacations, so we just give them something fun to do,” he said.
Smith explained the money raised through the golf scramble and donations first go to the sheriff’s association which is then used to operate the camp.
At the camp there are bunk-houses and many activities for the kids to participate in Smith said. He explained the kids get almost a full week at the camp, usually taken to the camp on Monday and picked up on Thursday.
“They have a lot of activities and a lake and a swimming pool, the camp is run all summer long and every county gets to participate,” he said.
Smith said Adam Donovan with the Fleming County Golf Association has helped coordinate the golf scramble for the last several years and recognized him on social media with a special thank you.
“We really appreciate all of the support we have received, the children we have been able to send to the camp have absolutely loved it. We look forward to participating again next year,” he said.
