Drive Sober, Get Pulled Over campaign starts Friday

The Maysville Police Department and Mason County Sheriff’s Office will be participating in the “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaign that will run from Aug. 16-Sept. 2.

The Maysville Police Department posted the announcement on their Facebook recently. According to the department, the crackdown will include “high-visibility enforcement, high-profile events, traffic safety checkpoints throughout the City/County, and will be supported by national paid advertising, creating a comprehensive campaign to curb impaired driving.”

“Our agencies aggressively watch for drunk drivers year-round, but by joining this effort, we will make our roadways safer during the heavily-traveled Labor Day holiday,” the post said.

According to the MPD, in 2018, there were more than 4,700 collisions that involved alcohol with more than 2,400 injuries and 87 fatalities in Kentucky. During the 2018 Labor Day weekend, there were 63 collisions involving alcohol that resulted in 26 injuries.

“The Maysville Police Department and Mason County Sheriff’s Office hopes the campaign will serve as a reminder that those who choose to drink should never get behind the wheel. However, if someone does choose to drive while drunk, we will arrest them. No warnings. No excuses,” MPD officials said in the post.

According to the National Highway Traffic Administration, there is an alcohol-related accident every 50 minutes in the United States and the “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaign helps to reduce alcohol-impaired vehicle fatalities by as much as 20 percent.
