The Maysville Knights of Columbus members were already preparing items Friday for Christmas dinners that will be served to the community.
According to Kelly Ashley, with the KCs, members started early preparations and will begin cooking the meal on Christmas Day.
“We’re already down here chopping onions and breaking bread for the stuffing,” he said.
Ashley said volunteers will start at 5 a.m., on Christmas Day in order to get the meals finished before they begin serving at 10 a.m.
“We prepare the meals to-go,” he said. “We have volunteers who will start delivering around 10 a.m. on Christmas. I usually tell people to expect their meals between 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.”
The meals will consist of a traditional Christmas-style dinner, including turkey, stuffing, potatoes, green beans, applesauce and a dessert.
Ashley said the Knights of Columbus did not always offer cooked meals.
“We’ve been doing this for about 20 years,” he said. “We originally started with offering baskets of meals with turkeys and other items that could be cooked, but there are a lot of people who don’t cook. We found it was better to serve the cooked meals.”
According to Ashley, the meals are one of many things the KCs do to try to give back to the community.
“We do several charity events throughout the year,” he said. “We’re a Catholic Men’s organization. Our council is over 100 years old. Want want to try to help people out. It’s something we like to do. The organization provides the meals because we want everyone to be able to have a cooked dinner on Christmas.”
Anyone who needs a meal on Christmas can call 606-584-2855 or 606-584-0449 for delivery.
“We’ve already started making calls,” Ashley said. “If anyone calls on Christmas, we just ask them try to call before 10 a.m. so we can make sure their meals are delivered. If you order food for someone else, just make sure they’re aware that we’re bringing the dinner. We don’t want to show up and surprise someone who doesn’t know and isn’t home.”
If anyone would like to volunteer to help deliver meals, they should go to the Knights of Columbus Hall on West Third Street by the Mason County Public Library.
