FRANKFORT — Enforcement of the REAL ID roll out will begin on Oct. 1, 2021.

Residents will have to visit regional centers in order to purchase the new ID. The regional center for this area is in Morehead.

There are several options for the new licenses.

According to drive.ky.gov, the standard driver’s license will cost $43 and the travel license will cost $48. Motorcycle standard license will be $43 and the travel license will be $48, driver/motorcycle combo license will be $53 for the standard and $58 for the travel, personal IDs will be $23 for standard and $28 for travel, driver’s permits will be $15 for standard and $18 for travel.

Licenses and personal IDs will expire in eight years instead of four. Driver’s permits will expire every three years.

There is a four-year expiration option as well, for a lower price, according to the site.

Both IDs will allow the holder to enter federal facilities that do not require a person to present identification, apply for federal benefits, participate in law enforcement proceedings or investigations, operate a vehicle, vote or register to vote, access health or life preserving services.

However, the Real ID will be required to pass through airport security checkpoints to board U.S. commercial flights and will be required for entrance to federally restricted facilities that require identification, such as military bases, nuclear power plants, federal agencies and the White House, according to drive.ky.gov.

In order to apply for the new driver’s license, applicants will need to provide their full name, date of birth, social security number, proof of Kentucky residency. They must provide their birth certificate and social security card.

Residents will receive a temporary license or personal ID document on the same day of the application with the actual ID being received by mail 10 to 15 business days after applying, according to the drive.ky.gov website.
