During a special meeting Monday, the Maysville Mason County Recreation Park committee agreed to reverse an earlier decision and prepare the park’s pool for opening at the end of the month.

The opening is contingent upon guidelines which were expected to be issued Monday afternoon by Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear.

The park is owned jointly by the city and county but operated by the city with the county contributing half the park’s budget. The pool, however, is operated by the YMCA so arguably, it should be the YMCA’s call, he said. The committee which includes Maysville City Manager Matt Wallingford, YMCA Director Tonya Wenz, County Judge-Executive Joe Pfeffer, County Commissioner Chris O’Hearn and City Commissioner Victor McKay, voted unanimously to recommend to city commissioners that the pool be closed for the 2020 season.

Only McKay, O’Hearn and Wallingford were on hand Monday.

Wallingford said the biggest concern for Wenz will be in hiring and training personnel in the two-week period before the anticipated June 29 reopening, Wallingford said. He said it may not be possible to be ready to open by that date.

Both O’Hearn and Wallingford cautioned the public to expect changes in how the pool operates and said residents should expect temperature checks and shared information on names and phone numbers as part of the reopening plan.

“People that come to the pool are going to have to understand that,” O’Hearn said.

The committee agreed to meet again once the state has issued guidelines for the reopening.

In a related item, the city will open all playgrounds beginning Wednesday, June 17, including the Maysville-Mason County Recreation Park. The Pro Shop at the park will be open and miniature golf and golf are available.

The city will sanitize all playgrounds at least once per week and residents are advised to wash/sanitize children’s hands before and after they play at any of the playground.
