A Maysville man reported missing nearly a week ago has yet to be located, Maysville Police Chief Jared Muse said Friday.
Daniel Cooper, 27, was reported missing by his mother on Sunday evening after he failed to contact her for about two weeks, Muse said. It was uncommon for her not to hear from her son for that length of time, he said.
“She was concerned something has happened to him,” Muse said.
Compounding his mother’s fear is the fact that another son was a victim of a drug overdose several years ago.
Ryan Cooper died in July 2012. He was 21 at the time. His body was discovered in a grassy area along Kentucky 8 near the William Harsha Bridge, west of Maysville. Three people were charged in connection with his death from a heroin overdose.
Detectives have been working to locate Daniel Cooper, concentrating on areas his mother said he frequented like Limestone Landing and Dover. Muse said he may have been living along the riverbank but so far detectives have found no evidence of his whereabouts and no reports from acquaintances.
“We’ve not had any significant response for anyone in the community,” Muse said.
Police have also reached out to hospitals throughout the area but there is no indication he has been treated at any of the facilities, he said.
Earlier in the week, Muse said detectives had followed up on several leads with no luck. Now Muse said police are hoping to expand the search to the Newport and Cincinnati area where they have heard he may be staying.
Daniel Cooper is a white male, approximately 5-feet, 9-inches tall. He weighs about 155 pounds. He has red hair and normally has a mustache and goatee. He is known to have some “issues” of his own, Muse said.
Cooper is known by Maysville Police and was arrested and lodged in the Mason County Detention Center on Sept. 30 on a disorderly conduct charge. He was released the next day, according to MCDC records.
Police are seeking the public’s help in locating Daniel Cooper, Muse said.
In the meantime, police will be checking to see if Daniel Cooper maintained a social media presence and if so if there has been any activity on his accounts.
“It’s just a matter of time before we figure out what’s going one,” Muse said. “Hopefully we find him and hopefully he’s OK.”
