The Mason County Lady Royals headed south to Morehead, Ky. on Monday, Sept. 22, to compete in the Region 12 girls’ golf tournament at Eagle Trace.
Their previous match at Eagle Trace this season saw them win the 2A Section 6 championship, earning a bid to the 2A State Championship in Owensboro on Monday, Sept. 8. There, the Lady Royals placed eighth overall, with Sydney Ullery leading the charge, shooting a 20-over-par 92 to tie for 22nd place.
The Region 12 tournament marked Mason County’s third trip to Eagle Trace this season. Having already familiarized themselves with the course and seen tremendous success, the Lady Royals were excited to return, hoping to qualify for the first round of the 2025 KHSAA state tournament.
The five golfers representing Mason County at the regional tournament were Taylor Schroer, Olivia Hughes, Amirah Reed, Sydney Ullery and Bentley Shepherd.
Ullery once again led the pack for the Lady Royals, placing eighth with a score of 87. Following her was Shepherd (90), Hughes (102), Reed (107) and Schroer (121).
As a team, Mason County placed second, shooting a 386 to come in two strokes ahead of the third-place team, the Boyd County Lady Lions. The 2025 12th Region girls’ golf champions were the Montgomery County Lady Indians, who finished with a team total of 331.
Their runner-up finish qualifies them to advance to the first round of state next Monday, Sept. 29, at the Winchester Country Club, where they hope to place high in the standings once again, looking to advance to the state championship in Bowling Green on Oct. 5-7.
Each of the Lady Royals have given their all this season in hopes of a strong postseason run. Schroer, Ullery and Shepherd went into the season hoping to improve upon the skills they already possessed on the course.
For Reed and Hughes, 2025 marked their first season teeing off for the Lady Royals, and they welcomed the challenge with open arms, helping lead their team to a state tournament appearance.
With the Region 12 tournament behind them, the Mason County Lady Royals will spend the next week preparing for what will be a field full of tough competition in hopes of securing their trip to Bowling Green.
