Spook is a playful puppy who would make a terrific addition to your family! Shelter Co-Director and Animal Control Officer (ACO) Rick Buttery describes Spook as “a loving dog full of live and puppy energy.” This boy loves to play! Spook is also very clever and has been doing well with learning how to walk on a leash and with common commands. He likes the older children who visit the shelter and is very friendly and affectionate.
Spook was surrendered to the shelter by his owner. He was initially extremely sick with Parvo, which he overcame thanks to treatment from Colonial Heights Veterinary Clinic and the shelter team. He is well and ready to be adopted now. If you are interested in this wonderful boy, scan the QR code beside his picture and apply to adopt him now!
The Mason County ACO continues to receive well over a hundred calls every month. The shelter had a new phone system installed in December 2024 that allows the shelter team and ACO to field calls on a shared number (606-564-6067). The ACO and shelter phones ring simultaneously with each incoming call, allowing available shelter staff to answer if the ACO is busy. If all staff members are busy and calls are missed, voicemails are routed to the shelter’s main phone and the shelter’s email account, which allows the team to receive and respond to each message as quickly as possible.
Additionally, the shelter team has an online form that can be utilized for non-urgent needs, such as to report a barking dog, request spay/neuter resources, etc.
The link to the Mason County Animal Assistance Form is: https://service.sheltermanager.com/asmservice?account=mcas&method=online_form_html&formid=46.
While the shelter’s Facebook page is a valuable tool to advertise dogs that are available for adoption and reunite lost dogs with their owners, it is not monitored 24/7 by shelter staff.
Tagging the shelter’s page in your Facebook posts is also not a reliable way to reach the shelter team. If you need assistance from the ACO, it is crucial that you call 606-564-6067, use the form for non-urgent issues, or dial 911 for emergencies so a dispatcher can contact the ACO and/or police to assist you immediately.
Adoption Information
All dogs adopted from Mason County Animal Shelter are spayed and neutered, microchipped, vaccinated, dewormed and treated with flea and tick preventatives. Adoption fees are half-priced thanks to the EnviroFlight Fur-ever Home Adoption Sponsorship Program! Adult dog adoption fees are $40, and puppy adoption fees are $60. One generous individual is willing to pay the adoption fee for a veteran to adopt a dog of their choice. Tom and Gail Wise have generously sponsored adoption fees for Pops and several dogs who have been adopted. Sponsors for the adoption fee for any of the shelter’s dogs are welcome! Contact the shelter for information.
Prospective adopters need to fill out a short application online or at the shelter for adoption approval. Go to the shelter’s Adopt-a-Pet website to view all available animals and fill out the application to adopt at www.adoptapet.com/shelter/90606/available-pets/pets or visit the shelter’s Petfinder website at www.petfinder.com/member/us/ky/maysville/mason-county-animal-shelter-ky421.
MCAS needs more volunteers and foster homes! You can foster a dog for as long as you like; a few hours, a “Doggo Day Out,” a weekend, a few weeks or longer. Volunteers can help in many ways, including walking dogs, grooming or bathing dogs, helping with playgroups, transporting or helping at meet-and-greet events out in the community. If you want to become an MCAS volunteer and/or fosterer or sponsor a dog’s adoption fees, please call the shelter at 606-564-6067 or email animalshelter@masoncountykentucky.us.
