AUGUSTA — A semi fire had Kentucky 9 AA Highway, near Augusta, blocked in the early morning hours Tuesday.
Augusta Volunteer Fire Department Chief Tony Mefford said, around 12:03 a.m., a semi was traveling through the area with household items for an individual who was moving to Virginia, when the truck caught fire.
“The truck was carrying items for a gentleman moving from Washington to Norfolk, Va.,” Mefford said. “He is a Naval officer and was being transferred. His entire household was inside that truck.”
Mefford said the truck’s tire blew out and caught fire. No one was injured.
“The driver disconnected the truck before it could catch the rest of the truck,” he said. “Thankfully, no one was injured.”
Mefford said it was a sad situation.
“Imagine being at home and getting the phone call that everything you own has been destroyed in a fire,” he said. “It’s a very sad situation.”
He did not have the name of the person who owned the contents of the truck.
The roadway was closed for about an hour while crews worked to put out the fire and clean up, according to Mefford.
Augusta VFD was assisted at the scene by the Brooksville Volunteer Fire Department, Bracken County Sheriff’s Deputy Ian Kelsch and representatives with the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet.
