On Tuesday night, Sept. 23, the Augusta Lady Panthers headed to Mt. Olivet to meet the Robertson County Lady Devils on the volleyball court.
The Lady Panthers entered the game on a six-game winning streak, having only lost three sets since their last loss to the Bracken County Lady Bears on Sept. 4. The team arrived determined to continue the streak in Robertson County.
The Lady Devils were similarly determined after losing to both the Lewis County Lady Lions and Wolfe County Lady Wolves in the Nicholas County quad-match on Saturday, Sept. 20.
The Lady Panthers got out ahead of Robertson County early in the first set, picking up a 5-2 lead. However, the Lady Devils were not willing to back down and tied the game 8-8.
Robertson County then pulled ahead to lead 20-16 before Augusta began to make a comeback, tying the contest 24-24 before taking the victory, 26-24.
“I just think we really dropped the ball on communication some there, which is usually a strong suit of ours,” said Lady Panthers Head Coach Paige McCord. “That was mostly it, we dropped the ball on communication, we didn’t have our middle coverage tight, and I thought they did a good job of adjusting in the second set with that.”
The Lady Devils were disappointed in their first loss and hoped to bounce back in Set Two.
“If we’d have won that one, the momentum would have been in our favor, but we had too many mistakes,” said Lady Devils Head Coach Anne Grause.
During the second set, Augusta built up another early lead, 10-3, and would remain ahead of the Lady Devils throughout the set. Robertson County worked to close the gap, at one point trailing 11-5, but the Lady Panthers eventually won the set 25-8.
“Shoutout to the girls. They did everything I asked, they were extremely coachable in fixing the mistakes that we had,” said Coach McCord. “We were beating ourselves with the mistakes that first set and I thought they really pulled it out and with confidence. We’ve not always walked into games with the confidence that we can be the winner, so that’s a big deal for us this year.”
This game marked Robertson County’s third straight loss, and the Lady Devils hope to snap their skid as they play the remainder of this week’s games.
“We needed a win, and we didn’t get it,” said Coach Grause. “They’re down. They get down way too fast, and we beat ourselves. That’s where we’ve been night after night, so we’re just going to keep trudging on. Don’t look behind, keep looking forward.”
With this win, the Lady Panthers have won seven consecutive games and plan to ride that momentum throughout the rest of this week and the remainder of the regular season.
“They have been super stoked every time that we walk in the locker room. I think this is the first time they said that we’ve beat Robertson County in their home gym, in five years at least,” said Coach McCord. “We lost four or five seniors last year. That’s a lot to lose for these girls to fill big shoes, and they’ve done well.”
Robertson County faced the Lewis County Lady Lions on the road earlier this week, and the team is gearing up again to host the Pendleton County Lady Cats this evening at 7 p.m.
Following last night’s game against the Nicholas County Lady Jackets, Augusta will take on both Powell and Harrison County at the Fillies Fall Fling on Saturday, Sept. 27.
