FLEMINGSBURG — A man wanted as a suspect in a West Virginia murder, and the shooting and kidnapping of his estranged wife, was arrested in Fleming County Saturday.
Darrell Davis, 48, of Cattletsburg, allegedly shot and killed Gary Newsome in a cabin in Lenore, W. Va., then set the building on fire, officials said.
Firefighters in Mingo County, W. Va., discovered Newsome’s body about 10:30 a.m., Saturday while responding to a burning building call on Newsome Ridge.
Mingo County is located in western West Virginia, and borders Pike County and Martin County in Kentucky.
Davis also allegedly shot his wife, Lara Davis, in the stomach and, according to his arrest report, showed up at a family member’s house in Fleming County Saturday afternoon.
Tony Gooding took Lara Davis to Fleming County Hospital.
“She said Davis had been driving around in Kentucky for a while, after she was shot, and that he had killed a man in West Virginia,” said Fleming Sheriff Scotty Royse. “They airlifted her from Fleming County Hospital to Lexington. Her condition is unknown at this time.”
Darrell Davis was arrested at 4 p.m., Saturday on Medical Park Drive in Flemingsburg.
Kentucky State Police are investigating the Kentucky portion of the case.
Davis has been arrested and charged with first-degree domestic assault, first-degree unlawful imprisonment, failure to render aid and tampering with physical evidence.
An investigation into the death of Newsome and attack of Lara Davis is also being conducted by West Virginia. police agencies.
Mingo County Sheriff’s Office is considering several charges against Davis including burglary, arson, murder, attempted murder and kidnapping.
Davis is in Mason County Detention Center where he is being held on a $250,000 cash bond.
