Join us on Sunday, July 21, at 2 p.m. in the Ripley Library Annex for a talk and visual program by Tom Zachman, detailing the space program that led up to the Apollo 11 landing on the moon. This is a free program, and everyone is welcome to attend.

Apollo 11 was the spaceflight that first landed humans on the Moon fifty years ago. Commander Neil Armstrong and lunar module pilot Buzz Aldrin landed the Apollo Lunar Module Eagle on July 20,1969. Armstrong became the first person to step onto the lunar surface six hours later July 21 at 02:56:15 UTC; Aldrin joined him 19 minutes later. They spent about two and a quarter hour together outside the spacecraft and collected 47.5 pounds of lunar material to bring back to Earth. Command module pilot Michael Collins flew the command module Columbia alone in lunar orbit while they were on the Moon’s surface. Armstrong and Aldrin spent 21.5 hours on the lunar surface at a site they named Tranquility Base before rejoining Columbia in lunar orbit.

Tom will address the engineering decisions of both the Soviet and American moon programs highlighting comparisons between the Russian N-1 and the United States Saturn V moon launch vehicles. He will bring two scale models of both rockets.

The human side of the Apollo 11 mission and the challenges of the actual mission will be discussed. Discussion of why American has not been back to moon since 1972 and the future of America in space with Project Artemis.

Bring your questions, there will be a question-and-answer period.

The 50th anniversary of the lunar landing celebration will continue on Friday July 26, at 7 p.m. with the showing of “First Man,” the story of astronaut Neil Armstrong (Ryan Gosling), and the legendary space mission that led him to become the first man to walk on the moon on July 20, 1969.

This is also a free event, and everyone is welcome to attend in the Ripley Library Annex. Due to the length of the movie (133 minutes), we will have an intermission during the showing.
