A Memorial Day observance is planned for the Ripley community for Monday, May 27, 2019.

Starting at 12:30 p.m. on Front Street, there will be a decorated bike, wagon or cart contest with three age categories — 2-8 years, 9-15 years and 16 years – adult.

Processional line up begins at 1 p.m. with the opening ceremony at the Front Street Monument beginning at 1:30 p.m., the processional will continue to the Red Oak Bridge for the placing of the wreath in memory of the soldiers who lost their lives.

The processional will end at the Maplewood Cemetery for the closing ceremony with speaker Retired United States Navy veteran Angela Bahnsen.

Angela is a native of Flemingsburg, and a 1995 graduate of Mason County High School in Maysville. While in high school, she participated in several varsity sports, marching band, color guard, and the Army JR ROTC program.

Following graduation in 1997 she enlisted with the United Stated Navy and began her boot camp training at the Great Lakes Naval Academy in Chicago. Following boot camp, Angela traveled to the United States Territory of Guam in the South Pacific, where she was stationed. Angela served as a Boatswains Marie on the USS Frank Cable AS-40. While serving on the Frank Cable, Angela was involved in training, directing, and supervising personnel in the ship’s maintenance duties in all activities. Angela served two years on the Frank Cable before being transferred to San Diego, Calif., at the Naval Amphibious Base Coronado in small boat repair. She was honorable discharged in August 2000.

Presently, Angela is employed by the University of Cincinnati Medical Center as a clinical certified medical assistant iRipley-Union-Lewis-Huntington high school. Angela is married to Doug Bahnsen and they residn the Center of Women’s Health at the main hospital. Angela has a daughter, Andrea who is a 2018 graduate of RULH High School.
