The Golden Chord Singers of Fleming County, under the direction of Mike Leet, are excited to present their 2019 spring dinner concert titled, “American Bandstand.”

Before the era of YouTube or MTV, in order to see the current musical artists, dances, fashions and fads, audiences across the nation tuned in weekly to watch American Bandstand. From its premier in 1952, to its final season in 1989, this dance television program brought national attention to top performers of the day, as well as new artists that got their debut on the show. From doo-wop, teen idols, Motown, rock, disco, and even hip-hop, the show defined four decades of popular music. Hosted by Dick Clark, each live episode featured the latest dance craze, an audience interaction “Rate a Record” segment, plus interviews and performances by guest artists or groups. In fact, the show’s popularity and instant exposure seemed to be a springboard to stardom, and many artists felt they hadn’t really “made it” until they had appeared on American Bandstand. Acts that went on to become legends, including Aretha Franklin, Sonny and Cher, the Jackson 5, Smokey Robinson and the Miracles, as well as Prince and Madonna were introduced on its stage.

Join us as we present a sample of four decades of song styles. Representing the 50s, fun songs such as “At the Hop” and the electric “Great Balls of Fire” will transport you to the juke box era of sock hops and poodle skirts. Groove with the smooth sound of Motown as we sing hits like “I Second that Emotion,” “I Heard it Through the Grapevine,” and “My Girl.” Recall some rock songs and ballads from the 70s such as “Joy to the World,” and “Unchained Melody.” Also, you’ll hear chart topping tunes from the late 70s into the early 80s, like “Summer Nights” from Grease and a medley of hits from the superstar group ABBA. The concert wouldn’t be complete without “Bandstand Boogie,” the iconic American Bandstand theme song.

The concerts will be held on Friday, May 17, and Saturday, May 18, 2019 in the fellowship hall of the First United Methodist Church, located at 117 West Main Street in Flemingsburg. Dinner will be available for Friday night only, with tickets at $18 each. Meal will be grilled chicken, mashed potatoes, green beans, cole slaw, roll and dessert. Dinner will begin at 7 p.m., with concert to follow at 8 p.m.

Saturday night is concert only, and will begin at 7 p.m.At the door price for the concert only each night is $8 for adults and $6 for those 10 and under.
