MPD investigating discovery of human remains

Maysville police are investigating what they said are human remains discovered Sunday afternoon on the banks of the Ohio River in Maysville.

According to Maysville Assistant Police Chief Jared Muse, a father and son were fishing in the area on Sunday when they found the body and contacted police.

“They saw what they believed to be human remains and contacted the authorities,” Muse said.

Police and firefighters were then called to the scene in the 700 block of West Second Street just after 4 p.m., in reference to the human remains.

According to Muse, the current goal for the department is to find out if anyone is missing from area and to have the remains identified. Muse also said it is too early in the investigation to know if foul play is suspected.

“Right now, officers are trying to make an identification,” he said. “The remains have been sent to the medical examiner’s office in Frankfort.”

Muse also said it is unknown how long the remains may have been in the area before being discovered.

According to Muse, the Maysville Police Department was assisted at the scene by the Mason County Coroner, Maysville Fire Department and EMS and the Mason County Sheriff’s Office.

Anyone with information on the identity of the body is encouraged to call the MPD at 606-564-9411.
