MCTC classes start remotely for first week

Like many other students, those who attend Maysville Community and Technical College will return to the classroom soon.

MCTC classes start on Monday, Jan. 11, and all classes and labs will be offered remotely the first week of class, officials said recently.

Students are being advised to check Blackboard and contact their instructors for specific course information.

For the first week of class, instead of coming to campus, students who signed up for on-campus classes will attend remotely during the regularly-scheduled class time and join a live stream of the class available through Microsoft Teams or Blackboard Collaborate, according to information from the college. During the live stream, students will be able to listen to and see the instructor, “raise their hand” to ask a question, talk to the instructor and type comments in the chat box. Live streams will also be recorded and posted to be viewed online at any time for students who cannot log in during the scheduled class time. For students who do not have reliable access to a computer or the Internet, students can log in from an on-campus computer and use personal headphones.

During the first week of class, instructors will:

— Discuss the instructional plan for the semester.

— Develop a rotating schedule for students to come to class and/or lab, as needed, to ensure social distancing.

— Work with students to understand their unique concerns and technology needs.

— Connect students to support services to help them be successful this semester.

After the first week of class, on-campus, in-classroom seats will also be available in accordance with Kentucky’s social-distancing guidelines. Students who attend in-person will be required to wear a face mask at all times while on-campus.

Classes scheduled for 100 percent online delivery will available through Blackboard as usual.

All MCTC campuses are open during normal business hours (Monday – Friday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.) with reduced staffing. Students are strongly encouraged to call ahead and schedule an appointment before coming to campus to ensure availability.
