FRANKFORT — Craig Miller of Augusta, a Bracken County magistrate, has filed with the Secretary of State’s office to seek the Democratic nomination for the Kentucky House of Representatives District 70, which represents Bracken, Fleming, Mason, and Robertson counties.

Current Representative John Sims Jr. said in May 2019 that he would not seek reelection in 2020 after serving two terms. All 100 House seats and 19 of the 38 Senate seats will be on the ballot for the Primary Election on May 19, 2020.

Miller, with his wife Amy Miller and children Grayson, Griffin and Sophie at his side, officially signed and submitted his notification and declaration papers on Tuesday, Nov. 12. House Minority Floor Leader Rocky Adkins and Sims, as well as Miller’s parents, Skip and Caroline Miller, joined him for the announcement.

“Our District has been fortunate to have only had three people represent us for 41 years, from Pete Worthington, to Mike Denham, to John now, so this opportunity does not come along very often, especially being an open seat. I’m honored and extremely humbled to be in the position to file to be our next state representative serving the great people of the 70thDistrict,” Miller said.

“These four counties have helped mold me into the person I am today, from the many great educators and coaches, to the business leaders and elected officials. I have watched, admired, and learned from a countless array of citizens throughout our region. I will listen, work, and pray to be the best public servant I can and try to always do what is right for the constituents of the 70th District.”

Sims is endorsing Miller’s candidacy and was one of the first to congratulate him on filing.

“I’ve known Craig for many years and have seen his tireless commitment to his family, his business, and the people of Bracken County, our region, and our commonwealth. I’m proud to see him step into this journey of joining the Legislature,” Sims said.

Adkins expressed similar comments.

“I’ve known Craig for quite some time and have enjoyed working with him on numerous issues. Craig is a hardworking public servant who will continue to serve the people of Bracken, Fleming, Mason, and Robertson counties with integrity and respect. I’m honored to call him a friend and I look forward to working with him in Frankfort.”

Miller is currently serving his first term as Augusta West Magistrate on the Bracken County Fiscal Court, is the third generation family member to operate Miller Lumber Company in Augusta, is the past chairman or president of numerous state and local boards and committees, and is a volunteer coach or member of many leagues and non-profits throughout the area.
