Questions surround the sudden closing of a local christian school this week.

Fonda Childers, administrator of Highland Christian School and Daycare in Maysville, announced the permanent closure of the school Wednesday afternoon. An image of a letter, signed by Childers, was posted on the school’s Facebook page and on the door of the facility located in the old Hecks Department Store building on U.S. 62. The letter indicated the closure was due to “unfounded allegations” against herself and her staff members.

“As much as we wanted this ministry to continue beyond our years, we must close to protect my staff from further distress and undo reputable harm,” the letter reads.

According to Jared Muse, assistant chief of the Maysville Police Department, Detective Chris Conely recently received a call from a parent alleging that their child who attended the school had been injured due to the actions of staff. As part of department procedure, Conley notified the Kentucky Cabinet for Family and Health Services to assist in the investigation.

Muse said Conley could not find any apparent indication of any criminal activity, but handed the case over to the CFHS Office of the Inspector General for further investigation, as it would be more familiar with the policies involved with such an institution.

Fonda said in her letter that it was not the state that had closed the school, but was in fact her own choice to do so.

Efforts to contact Childers via social media and phone have been unsuccessful. The Office of the Inspector General has yet to divulge any information regarding a possible investigation into the school.

Information on the number of children who attended the school and daycare before it closed was not available Thursday.

More information regarding the closure of the Highland Christian School and Daycare will be published if it becomes available.
