A Mason County Detention Center inmate has been indicted on a charge that he allegedly made or obtained contraband known as a shank.

Shank is a slang term for a knife that’s typically made from something else and is most often found in jails and prisons.

According to the indictment, Kenneth B. Neal, 47, of Hillsboro, was an inmate at the detention center when he allegedly obtained the weapon on Jan. 30, 2019. He is charged with first-degree promoting contraband.

Neal was released from the MCDC on Jan. 19 without bond, according to MCDC records.

Leslie O’Daire, 45, was indicted for allegedly threatening to commit a crime that would likely result in “death or serious physical injuries to another person,” when O’Daire threatened to kill Maysville Police Officer Eric Poynter. O’Daire is also charged with third-degree assault in connected with the case for allegedly striking Poynter with a closed fist, kicking the officer and attempting to bit him.

O’Diare is set for arraignment on April 10 in Mason District Court.

Other indictments handed down included:

—Frankie L. Sheldon, 22, possession of a .22-caliber handgun by a convicted felon.

— Joseph Alan Pickett, 33, third-degree burglary, first-degree criminal possession of a forged instrument, theft by unlawful taking.

— Thomas Jacob Henderson, 50, disposal at other than permitted site, open dump.

— Anthony Tyler Fulton, 30, failure to comply with sex offender registry.

— Jessica E. Earlywine, 36, second-degree forgery.

— Phillip J. Reed, 39, second-degree possession of a forged instrument, second-degree persistent felony offender.
