It was the perfect opportunity which came at the right time and local leaders jumped at the chance to include Maysville in a magazine focused on Kentucky.
American Airlines Spotlight magazine will be in every seat on international and domestic flights for the month of June, with Kentucky — “this magical blend of Southern graciousness and hospitality blended with a Midwestern work ethic and pragmatism,” according to Gov. Matt Bevin — as the featured destination. And tucked among the pages, on page 22 to be exact, is an ad enticing visitors to come see us in Maysville and explore what the city has to offer.
”My first week on the job, representatives with the Cabinet (for Economic Development) and American reached out and while they had successfully booked up the campaign, a few areas lost their funding with only weeks left,” Maysville-Mason County Industrial Development Director Owen McNeill said. “I worked with Caroline Reece with the Maysville Main Street who helped secure funding between Main Street and Tourism.”
But because Maysville was late to the game, time was of the essence, he said.
“We literally turned the ad around in a week, only spending approximately one-fifth of what we would have had we joined the campaign on day one,” McNeill said.
“It seemed like a great opportunity to play to a captive audience for a few hours,” Reece said,
Travelers who thumb through the magazine will find the ad which highlights Kentucky companies and lets potential investors know why the commonwealth — and Maysville — is a good investment for them and their companies.
Reece and Maysville City Manager Matt Wallingford both said it is an exciting time for Maysville as officials prepare to apply for an entertainment zone license for the city and as interest in downtown builds.
“It is an exciting time here in Maysville, especially in the downtown area,” Reece said.
“I think the dominoes are going to fall in our favor,” Wallingford said.
Reece said more building have been purchased in the downtown area in the last few months than in the last five years. She also said partnerships, like that between Main Street and The Maysville Players which sponsored last week’s Maysville Uncorked make it all happen.
“Good partnerships make it work,” she said.
“The opportunity with American Airlines Spotlight Kentucky provides the perfect demographic Maysville is looking for,” McNeill concluded. “This ad will be seen by every international and domestic passenger during the month of June with well over 60 percent of American Airline passengers being C-level and higher executives traveling for work. This ad targets decision makers for companies large and small and highlights the fact that Maysville, Kentucky is a great place to visit, explore and do business.”
