MASON COUNTY 5, MARTIN COUNTY 1 (BASEBALL)

A pair of freshman in Eli Porter and Landon Scilley combined to pitch a n0-hitter for the Royals in their 5-1 win over Martin County at the Frank Bloom Invitational at Russell on Saturday.

Porter pitched four innings, striking out eight and walking six and allowing a run. Scilley pitched the final three innings, striking out four and walking one.

Jamison Gifford went 2-for-2 with a double and two RBI. Westin Messer also had an extra base hit with a double and an RBI. The Royals may have walked seven batters, but they drew 13 walks themselves in the game. The win got them to 2-5 on the season after losing to Russell 9-0 earlier in the day. They went 1-2 in the Invitational, losing 15-4 to Johnson Central on Friday night.

The Royals will host Fleming County on Tuesday night.

NICHOLAS COUNTY WINS BASEBALL, SOFTBALL ALL “A”

The Bluejackets and Lady Jackets claimed the 10th Region All “A” baseball and softball championships on Saturday.

The Bluejackets defeated Augusta 4-2 in the semifinals and Bishop Brossart 7-1 in the championship.

The Panthers put a scare into the Blue Jackets, jumping out to a 2-0 lead in the first, but was answered by two Bluejacket runs in the bottom of the inning. Nicholas County added runs in the second and sixth innings to secure the victory.

Will Kelsch pitched a complete game for the Panthers, allowing six hits, four earned runs, striking out four and walking two.

Tristan Klinglehoffer and Joseph Mains each had a pair of hits for the Panthers.

Before facing Brossart in the championship, the Mustangs disposed of Bracken County 12-2 in six innings in the other semifinal. The Polar Bears walked 12 batters and committed six errors in the loss, allowing six runs in the first.

Hank Krift had the lone hit for the Polar Bears.

The Lady Jackets defeated Paris, St. Patrick and Bracken County on their way to the championship.

They defeated Paris and St. Patrick by a combined score of 33-0, before hanging on for a 3-2 victory over Bracken County in the title game.

The Lady Bears scored two in the top of the first, but Nicholas County answered with runs in the first, second and third inning. The pitchers duel ensued from there, Autumn Adams and Ella Johnson both pitching complete games. Adams struck out 12 while allowing five hits and two earned runs without walking a batter. Johnson allowed five hits and an earned run, striking out nine and walking four.

Georganna Carpenter had both RBI for the Lady Bears.

LEWIS COUNTY SOFTBALL CONTINUES TO ROLL

The Lady Lions won three games over the weekend by a combined score of 31-2 as they improved to 8-1 on the season. After picking up wins of 13-1 over Mason County and 10-0 against Harrison County on Friday in Mason County’s Keith Carver Classic, they defeated Ironton 8-1 at Boyd County’s Tri-State Showcase on Saturday.

Emily Cole pitched in 12 of those innings, tossing a no-hitter against Harrison County and a one-hitter against Ironton.

The sophomore is 7-1 with a 0.29 ERA and 94 strikeouts in 48 innings. She’s also hitting .500 at the plate with three home runs, two of them on Friday in the win over Harrison County.

Lewis County is outscoring teams 98-16 in their 8-1 start.

FLEMING COUNTY BRINGS THE BATS TO TRI-STATE SHOWCASE

The Fleming County softball team scored 46 runs in four games at Boyd County’s Tri-State Showcase on Friday and Saturday, going 3-1 to improve to 7-5 on the season.

They won games 17-4 over Dawson-Bryant (OH) on Friday, 15-14 over Huntington (WV) and 13-3 over Lincoln County on Saturday. They lost 16-1 to Cabell Midland (WV) on Friday.

They tallied 53 hits in the four games.

They’ll host Mason County on Monday.
