Andy Fryman will be throwing around his knowledge as a coach at Georgetown College.

The Mason County and University of Kentucky graduate was named as the throws coach on the Tigers’ track and field coaching staff on Tuesday.

“I would like to thank Coach [Lucas] Garnett and Georgetown College for allowing me to have this opportunity,” Fryman said in a press release. “I am excited to be back in my home state of Kentucky and look forward to building a strong throws tradition here at Georgetown.”

Fryman earned four state championships while competing for the Royals and still holds state records. His mark on 194-11 in the discus in 2003 is a Kentucky state record, while his mark of 65-07.50 is a Class 2A record in the shot put.

Fryman won the Nike Indoor High School title in the indoor and outdoor shot put, as well as the outdoor title in the discus. He was featured in Sports Illustrated’s “Faces in the Crowd” section as well. In addition, he was named a Track and Field News All-American in shot put and discus.

He continued his track and field career at Kentucky, where he was twice an All-American in the hammer throw and discuss and was the 2006 Southeastern Conference shot put champion.

He went on to be a graduate assistant at Sam Houston State and was most recently an assistant at Gardner-Webb University, according to the release.

Fryman nearly qualified for the Rio Olympics, finishing fifth at the Olympic Trials in the hammer throw with a season-best mark of 238-7 on his fifth throw. He finished just under five feet shy of a top-three finish in the trials.

“His qualifications speak for themselves,” head coach Lucas Garnett said in the release. “He’s coached NCAA All-Americans, NCAA national championship qualifiers and conference champions. He has mastered his craft personally and professionally, and we are excited to have him at Georgetown.”
