With the final race, jump, throw and height cleared for the 2019 track and field season, it’s time to name The Ledger Independent All-Area team.
The season had plenty of success stories, like Bracken County’s Kaleb Darnell becoming the school’s first in history to claim a state title, doing so in the long jump during the KHSAA Class A meet on May 30. He also claimed medals in the triple jump and 100-meter dash at the state meet. Darnell wasn’t the only Polar Bear to podium at the state meet, distance runners Brandon Cox and Jared Jefferson also hearing their names called with a medal in Lexington.
Others put up impressive performances during their competitions against other athletes in the state, such as Mason County’s Rachel Payne becoming a triple medalist at the KHSAA Class AA meet and Peebles’ Jenny Seas finishing third in the OHSAA Division III state meet in the 1,600 meters a year after claiming a state title in the event. Payne broke a 25-year-old school record in the 300-meter hurdles at the state meet. Seas helped the Lady Indians to a regional title while teammate Lilly Gray also put up impressive performances in both the 400 and 800 meters.
Abi Dawson and Olivia O’Hearn kept raising the bar in the pole vault for Mason County, both graduating with school record vaults of 10-feet in the event. Dawson also broke the school record in the 400 meters. The Lady Royals as a team got an all-around effort in the Class 2A, Region 6 meet, tying with Ashland Blazer for the regional title, their first in five years after Ashland had won the last four team titles.
West Union’s Conner Campbell put up impressive numbers at the annual Southern Hills Athletic Conference meet and earned SHAC titles in the 200-meter dash and the long jump to go with a third-place finish in the 100-meter dash.
The All-Area team is composed of the top two times and distances among the 13-school area, with each competitor getting credit for their season best time or distance.
