John Everett was not only a leader on the basketball court for the Kentucky Wildcats where he was named the captain of the team in 1919, but also a leader here in Maysville.
The junior Everett attended school in Maysville and then he attended the preparatory academy of the South at Sewanee, Tennessee. After his playing days at UK, Mr. Everett returned to Maysville and became a leader of public education. As a member of the Maysville School Board, he was the driving force behind building the auditorium, gymnasium which stands today.
His education service was broadened in March of 1944 when former Governor Simeon Willis appointed him a trustee of his alma mater, the University of Kentucky. His leadership was not only on the hardwood and education, but in business. He was also a successful businessman, having been associated since 1921 with the grain and feed business founded by his late father in 1896. The former UK basketball captain and his family have meant so much to our area over the years in many facets.
The answer to last week’s trivia question was that David McGuffey played football for Notre Dame after his playing days for Nicholas County. Ronnie Berryman and Chris O’ Hearn had the correct answer.
This week’s question pertains to another Ohio State tradition. What Ohio State band member has the honor of dotting the “I”?

This week’s picks: (17-3 last week, 84-16 YTD, 84%)
Louisville over Georgia Tech: I pick the Cards to pull off the mild upset at home.
Clemson over Wake Forest: The Tigers almost got upset last week, but I pick them to win this one by eight.
Ohio State over Indiana: If this was a game on the hardwood, it would be interesting, but the Buckeyes roll in this one.
Florida over LSU: Tough one to pick but I am starting to believe in the Gators.
Michigan over Maryland: I take the Maize and Blue to beat the Turtles by 12.
South Carolina over Missouri: The Gamecocks will regroup and squeak by the Tigers by two.
Notre Dame over Virginia Tech: Trap game for the Irish, but I still pick them to win in Blacksburg.
Washington over UCLA: The Bruins head coach, Chip Kelly, wishes he stayed in Oregon.
West Virginia over Kansas: The Jayhawks are improving but not enough to stop the Mountaineers.
Alabama over Arkansas: All I can say is “Roll Tide”, Alabama will win.
Georgia over Vanderbilt: The Dores will have trouble on both sides of the ball against the Dawgs.
Kentucky over Texas A&M: I think the ‘Cats can pull off the upset on the road as the Josh Allen will wreak havoc for the Aggie’s offensive line.
Cincinnati over Tulane: The Green Wave had a big win last week, but I take the Bearcats by seven.
Michigan State over Northwestern: The Wildcats let one slip away last week, but this week they lose by five.
Oklahoma over Texas: Big rival game, both teams are playing well, but I take the Sooners.
San Diego over Morehead State: I never can grasp why a team from California is in Morehead’s conference.
Wisconsin over Nebraska: The beat down of the Huskers continue as the Badgers roll.
Miami (Fla) over Florida State: The Canes will get out their turnover chain often in this rival game.
Auburn over Mississippi State: A coin toss for me to pick this SEC West game, the coin came up for the Tigers.
Stanford over Utah: The Cardinal looked bad against the Irish, they will rebound for the win.
