Liles heading back to state

Logan Liles made a splash as an eighth grader on the golf course last year, making the cut at the Leachman Buick GMC Cadillac/KHSAA State Golf Championship and finishing tied for 47th.

He’s heading back this fall as a freshman after earning an individual berth in the state tournament by shooting a 1-over 73 at the 12th Region Tournament at Hidden Cove in Grayson on Tuesday.

“He just scrambled really well. He didn’t hit the ball great – the conditions were horrible,” said Lewis County coach Jim Draper. “He made good putts and did a pretty good job getting himself out of trouble when he strayed away from the golf course.”

Liles finished behind Morgan County’s Blake Evans and Montgomery County’s Luke Fuller, who both fired 71s. Evans won the tiebreaker for the individual title. Lawrence County’s Hunter Gable finished third at even par. Liles edged Rowan County’s Luke Burrows, who also shot a 1-over 73, in two tiebreaker holes for the third individual qualifying spot.

Now Liles will look to improve at Bowling Green Country Club after shooting a 5-over 77 on the first day of the state tournament last year and a 7-over 79 on the second day to finish 12-over in the two-day event.

“He’s pretty level headed. He’s just going to go down there and try to play his game,” said Draper. “The course plays a little long. His advantage is keeping it in play. He learned a lot about that last year, to keep it in fairways – the rough is difficult down there. That will be the focus so he’s in a good position on his second shots.”

The state tournament is scheduled to begin next Friday. The second round is scheduled to be played the next day. State qualifiers will get a practice round Thursday.

The tough conditions didn’t do the rest of the Lions any favors on Tuesday as they placed sixth as a team. Austin Ruggles posted the second-best score from Lewis County with a 10-over 82. Cameron Ruckel shot a 91 and Avery Sartan shot a 101. Mark Sparks finished with a 130.

“The golf course was extremely wet. It was really difficult. It played very long and had no roll,” said Draper.

“Hate it for the seniors,” added Draper,” but we’ll be rebuilding next year.”

Montgomery County claimed the team title with a 299, led by Fuller’s 1-under 71. Their next three golfers – Jon Kosier, Garrett Smith and Logan McCormick – all finished under 80.

West Carter claimed second with a 322, just one stroke better than Greenup County. East Carter finished fourth at 330 and Morgan County was fifth at 345.
