Hanging on to a Memory

Ron Bailey -

I believe there is a direct correlation between how tightly you hold on to something and how hard it is to let it go.

Growing up, I could not wait to turn the newspaper yes, we had to turn the paper back then, to Punk’s Picks. Nothing makes me more nostalgic than thinking about Punk’s picks for the weekend college football games.

Like I stated before when I was around Punk, I did the wise thing and just kept quiet and listened. Punk’s picks were more than a column to all The Ledger Independent readers as it was Maysville. They say if a seed is planted early enough, then the roots will spread too deeply to ever be unearthed. For me I want to hold on to some traditions and I want to as always dedicate this column to Punk Griffin. Preserving history, honoring greatness and connecting generations, those words sum up this column.

This year’s first trivia question ties in Fleming County and UK football. This former resident of Fleming County caught two touchdown passes in a Bowl game for the UK Wildcats. Who was it?

Week 1 picks: (Last Season 241-70, 77%)

Eastern Kentucky over Morehead State: The men from Richmond will show off their offense in this rivalry game.

Minnesota over New Mexico State: The Golden Gophers will be pure gold as they win this game by 2 TDs.

UCLA over Cincinnati: The Bruins have suspended 6 players for this game, but they will have enough firepower to beat the Bearcats in LA.

Wisconsin over Western Kentucky: The Toppers simply do not have enough to beat a good Badger team on the road.

Stanford over San Diego State: You know what they say about paybacks? The Cardinal gets revenge from last year.

Ohio State over Oregon State: No head coach, no problem as the Buckeyes win by 25.

Texas over Maryland: The Longhorns will seek revenge for last year’s upset to the Turtles.

Alabama over Louisville: Bobby Petrino, the head man of the Cards says they will beat the Tide, pump the brakes Coach.

Southern Cal over UNLV: The Trojans are starting a true freshman at QB, but their defense will win this game.

Kentucky over Central Michigan: The Cats superstar running back, Benny Snell will have 127 yards rushing as the Cats win.

Notre Dame over Michigan: Tough one to pick but I go with the luck of the Irish at home.

Kansas State over South Dakota: This will be a high scoring game, but I go with the team dressed in purple.

Tennessee over West Virginia: My upset pick of the week, I know the Mountaineers are loaded and big favorites, but I pick the Vols in an upset.

Miami (Fla) over LSU: This will be a great game, but I pick the Canes as they pass out the turnover chain.

Florida State over Virginia Tech: This is another tough one to pick as the Noles bring back their QB-Deondre Francois after last year’s injury.

Auburn over Washington: Very important game between two great squads, but I pick Auburn to win by one.

Nebraska over Akron: The Huskers new coach Scott Frost will win his opening game for Big Red.

Oregon over Bowling Green State: The Ducks will put over 50 points on the board and I will say their uniforms will look good too.

Arizona over BYU: The Wildcats should win this game, but they have let me down before.

Illinois over Kent State: I think the Illini head man, Lovie Smith is going to surprise in the Big Ten this year.
