BROOKSVILLE – Some nights a team just can’t do much right.

That was the case Wednesday night at The Igloo in Brooksville.

Bracken County committed 25 errors and could never seem to stay out of their own way in a 2-0 (25-19, 25-9) loss to Pendleton County.

“Some nights it’s like that. I told the girls after the match, ‘Some nights you just don’t play well, we just didn’t play well tonight.’ Give all the credit to Pendleton County. They played well and came ready to play,” Lady Bears coach Wade Smith said.

Coming into the match, the Lady Bears had lost to just one opponent on the season, Calvary Christian, albeit three times, but the early season success that got them to a 6-3 record wasn’t in the cards for Bracken.

They’d start strong with a 5-1 lead in the first set after back-to-back kills from Natalie Bell, but things turned south from there. The front line play of Savannah Tillett, Hailey Baker and Olivia Miracle started to cause problems for the Lady Bears, as they accumulated kills to build the Lady Cats a run and a 11-7 lead, forcing a Bracken timeout.

They’d collect three more points in a row out of the break to build a 14-7 edge. Bracken responded with consecutive points, but a Miracle kill still kept Pendleton up comfortably, 17-11.

Two kills from Aly Keuper and another from Audrey Wright got Bracken within 20-15 and as close as 23-19, but kills from Baker and Miracle closed out the first set in the Lady Cats favor.

Another solid start to a set for Bracken came in the second, leading 5-3 and up to 8-6 after an Aryah Myrick ace, but things went quickly downhill after that.

The Lady Cats closed the contest on a 19-1 run from there to take the match convincingly, 25-9 in the second set.

“We just didn’t have it in the second set. We got in a stuck where we just couldn’t get a hit in,” Smith said.

The Lady Bears ended with 25 errors to just 11 kills and two aces. Bell led the Lady Bears with five kills. Myrick and Madison Goecke, fresh off her Kentucky State Fair Grand and Reserve Championship in Goats, had one ace apiece.

“We go at it again tomorrow night, we play Robertson County again here tomorrow. We can’t let this get you down, it’s a game, sun comes up tomorrow. Got to be ready to play.”

The Lady Bears look to regroup as they host the Lady Devils at 7 p.m.

Pendleton tallied 16 kills and four aces while committing just 12 errors. Miracle led the way with six kills, followed by Tillett’s six. Sam Verst led with two aces.
