ALEXANDRIA – St. Patrick and Bracken County each began the first-round of Monday’s 10th Region All “A” Tournament at Bishop Brossart by giving their Northern Kentucky opponent a game-one challenge before falling in the end.

St. Patrick (5-3) led host Bishop Brossart 7-4 early in the first game of the opening match and sat tied with the defending champions at 19-19. The Lady ‘Stangs scored four straight to take control, before the Lady Saints clawed back within one at 23-22. But the hosts answered and came away with a 25-22 victory.

Bishop Brossart (2-3) was never really challenged in the second game and pulled away to a 25-14 win. The Lady ‘Stangs surged in front 10-3 and stretched the lead to 20-10. The Lady Saints answered with a 4-1 surge, but the hosts held on for the 11-point victory.

The Lady Saints had five kills and six aces in the match. They return to action on Wednesday at home against Sayre.

CALVARY CHRISTIAN DEF. BRACKEN COUNTY, 2-0 (25-20, 25-16)

Bracken County (3-1) led by three points at 5-2 and 12-9 in its first game against Calvary Christian, but the Lady Cougars rallied to score seven straight after the latter deficit, benefitting from four Reese Burton aces, to surge ahead and eventually claim a 25-20 win.

There were two ties in the early moments of the second game, but after that Calvary (6-3) took control. The Lady Bears closed to within seven at 21-14, but the Lady Cougars held off a late run to capture the 25-16 victory.

Aryah Myrick had nine kills to lead the Lady Bears while the team collected three aces.

After their respective matches, senior Elizabeth McKay (St. Patrick) and Madison Goecke (Bracken County) were each named to the all-tournament team.

AUGUSTA DEF. SILVER GROVE, 2-0 (25-10, 25-8)

The Lady Panthers (2-5) made light work of the Lady Trains (0-6) in Tuesday’s second quarterfinal matchup.

The win moves them on to Wednesday’s semifinals, taking on Nicholas County at 7:30 p.m. in the semifinals. The Lady Jackets knocked off Robertson County, Tuesday, in straight sets.

Bishop Brossart takes on Calvary Christian in the first semifinal at 6 p.m.
