The annual Cave Run Kids Fishing Derby is scheduled for Saturday providing another year of exciting fishing for children ages 1-15 who are accompanied by an adult.

Each year hundreds of kids have enjoyed free fishing and other fun activities during this event. No fishing license is needed and there is no cost to participate.

The Kids Fishing Derby will be held at the Minor E. Clark Fish Hatchery on KY Highway 801 South, where kids are invited to join in the fun of fishing and other activities throughout the morning. With three ponds open for fishing, participants will have the opportunity to reel in stringers full of channel catfish, rainbow trout, and even trophy sized large-mouth bass.

The Fishing Derby will begin with registration starting at 6 a.m. The three ponds will open for fishing from 7 a.m.-11 a.m. Youngsters should plan to bring a fishing rod, tackle, and a cooler for keeping their catch fresh, as well as lawn chairs to sit on. A variety of fishing baits will be provided as supplies last and there will be a limited number of fishing poles available for children who need to borrow one. Volunteers will be on hand to clean and filet each child’s catch at no charge and there will be free food, games, displays and prizes. Every child also receives a goody bag and a free t-shirt.

This year will be near the 20th year of having the derby and about the 11th that it has been held at the Clark Fish Hatchery. This event is open to all members of the public, is completely 100% free and is a great family event and a way to introduce a kid to fishing. There are usually about 700 kids and other events include random raffles along with some “tagged fish” giveaways which includes a kayak and a paddle boat. This is a free event where everyone gets sent home with something, even if it is just a bag of cleaned fish.
