MT. STERLING | The boys’ and girls’ 10th Region Tennis Tournament got underway on Friday, but intermittent rain forced a two-hour delay in the middle of play and consequently a change in the schedule at Easy Walker Park.
First-round boys’ singles started the day, before the rain hit during the completion of the girls’ singles action and tournament organizers elected to just finish the first round of singles and doubles.
Area teams fared well as Mason County, St. Patrick and Augusta all won at least one match.
Mason County fared particularly well with Gavin Gilbert defeating St. Patrick’s Payton Schumacher 6-0, 6-0; Kevin Schmidt defeating Augusta’s John Paul Cordle 6-1, 6-1; Kaitlyn Cottam defeating Bracken County’s Alyssa Bex 6-1, 6-1; Katie Swisshelm and Maddie McElfresh defeating St. Patrick’s Kylie Purdin and Katie Hord 6-0, 6-1; and Mason County’s Zane Sanders and Wyatt McElfresh defeating Bracken County’s Logan Teegarden and Kaden Hall.
Other first-round winners included No. 7 Garrett Purdon of Augusta over Harrison County’s Isaiah Stiltner 6-2, 3-6 (10-6); St. Patrick’s Jake Swolsky over Bracken County’s Chase Wilson 6-2, 6-4; and Lady Saint Anna Porter over Bracken County’s Hannah Weltz 7-5, 7-5.
All of Friday’s victors as well as those who received byes will compete in the second round which begins Saturday with action moving to the indoor courts at Eastern Kentucky University beginning at 8 a.m. The goal is to finish second and third round play for all four groups on Saturday with the semifinals and finals to tentatively be played on Monday, weather permitting.
The latter group includes top-seeded Tessa Gray of Mason County; Lilly Smith and Brianna Smith of Bracken County; Makenleigh Keuper and Dessie Dunnigan of Bracken County and St. Patrick’s No. 2 seeded Evan and Logan Kalb.
