FLEMINGSBURG — James Saunders “Sandy” Dawkins, 70, of Lexington, passed away Sunday, Jan. 16, 2022, at the University of Kentucky Medical Center.

Born in Louisville, on Oct. 27, 1951, he was the son of the late Joseph Harrison Dawkins and the late Mary Catherine Saunders Dawkins.

Sandy was raised in Flemingsburg, and was a graduate of Fleming County High School. He graduated from the University of Kentucky in Lexington, where he was a member of the Phi Kappa Tau fraternity. He decided to call Lexington home for the rest of his days. He was a retired banker.

He is survived by his wife, Jolene Dawkins; his two daughters, Kristin (Rich) Thompson and Kelly (Patrick) Hawthorne; his four grandchildren, Lilly Hawthorne, Harrison Hawthorne, Woods Thompson, and Riggins Thompson; all of Lexington. He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Lynna (April Bock) Porter of Lexington; and his mother-in-law, Bernita Porter of Flemingsburg.

Sandy is being privately cared for by Boone-Nickell Funeral Home in Flemingsburg.

Graveside services will be announced at a later date.
