FLEMINGSBURG — Tom Newsom, 71, of Flemingsburg, passed away unexpectedly at his residence on Monday, Oct. 8, 2018.

Born in Fleming County on July 12, 1947, Tom was the son of the late Andy and Alma Adams Newsom.

Tom worked for Lakewood Grocery for 10 years and Browning Manufacturing for almost two years; however, he found his absolute joy as a lifelong farmer like his father before him.

He loved to hunt and enjoyed teaching his grandchildren how to shoot and fish. Known as a jack of all trades, he truly was a master of all-able to build his own house as well as his daughter’s. Faith and family were Tom’s foundation. He and his wife, Velma sang together and he was the song leader at the Flemingsburg Church of the Nazarene where he attended.

Tom is survived by his wife of 53 years, Velma Boling Newsom; his daughters, Janet Grimes Driggs and husband, Jeff, Melinda “Mindy” Wisecup and husband, Marty; his grandchildren, Michael Clark Wisecup, Mason Thomas Wisecup, Nathaniel Patrick Grimes and Kassie Jade Grimes. He is also survived by his siblings, Gene Newsom and wife, Peach, Bill Newsom and wife, Brenda, Sam Newsom and wife, Jenny, Eulene “Lee” Young, Imogene Gulley and husband, Jimmy, Phyllis Boling and husband, Rev. Jerry; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and family members.

In addition to his parents, Tom was preceded in death by his son-in-law, Pat Grimes; his sister, Golda Cooper; his brothers, Phillip Newsom and Edward Newsom; his brothers-in-law, Rev. Wendell Cooper and John Young.

Services will be at 11 a.m., Saturday, Oct. 13, at Boone-Nickell Funeral Home with Rev. Jerry Boling and Rev. Clint Stricklen officiating.

Tom will be laid to rest in Mount Carmel Cemetery. Pallbearers include Nate Grimes, Kevin Boling, Dennis Doyle, Jr., Steve Newsom, Joe Gulley, Rick Newsom, Dwayne Newsom and Phillip Gulley. Honorary pallbearers include Michael Wisecup and Mason Wisecup.

Visitation will be 5-9 p.m., Friday, at the funeral home.
