VANCEBURG — Training to help businesses and churches be prepared for emergency situations will be held on Thursday in Lewis County.

Lewis County Judge-Executive Todd Ruckel said the training will begin at 5:30 p.m. and is expected to last about two to three hours.

During the training, Sheriff Johnny Bivens and Emergency Management Director George Sparks will present safety information. James Stephens, who served as the post commander for the Kentucky State Police Ashland post will be the featured speaker.

Ruckel said anyone can attend the training, but it is going to be geared more toward churches and businesses.

“We are going to focus on the business and church community,” Ruckel said

The training will include ways to be prepared in case of an active shooter situation and other emergency situations, as well as providing some first aid information, such as ways to stop bleeding.

According to Ruckel, it is important to have plans in place in case of an active shooter situation, just as it is important to be planned for other emergency situations.

“We have fire extinguishers; a plan in place in case we have a fire. We have plans if the electric goes out or it snows,” he said. “It’s important to be prepared.”

The training came about after a similar training was held in Morehead.

“After the shooting in Texas, there was a training held in Morehead,” he said. “We wanted to hold something similar here for our community.”

Ruckel said the training will be held on the third floor of the courthouse, which can hold up at 250 people.

“We expect it to be standing room only,” he said.
