Just in time for Veterans Day, two groups came together to clean up the Veterans Memorial Park in Mason County.

The Mason County Master Gardeners Association and students with the Mason County Army Junior Reserve Officer Training Corp recently teamed up to make sure the park was clean before winter sets in.

Barb Thompson, a Master Gardener student, said the groups completed several hours of work on the park recently, including trimming shrubs, cutting back perennials, removing weeds in the flower beds, cutting the grass, weed eating and other work.

“There were seven flower beds around the park,” she said. “We worked on all of them.”

Thompson said they completed the work in order to prepare the park for winter.

“This is done about twice a year,” she said. “In the Spring, we will re-mulch the area. We spent five hours at the park working on it.”

According to Thompson, there were several flags that also needed to be replaced during the cleanup efforts.

“There were several flags that were torn or worn down,” she said. “They were all replaced.”

Those who worked on the park included JROTC Battalion Commander Cadet Lt. Col. Chris Beach, Alden Lawson, Eric Scott, Samuel Cobb, Michael Martina, Jordan Hamilton and Tyler Marks, Senior ARMY Instructor Lt. Col. Thomas Cordingly. Treasurer and foundation member, Detective Ken Fuller were guiding the group. Master Gardener Debbie Allison, Polly White, students Barb Thompson and Judy Pfeffer, who is also the foundation secretary were present.

The Veteran’s Memorial Park is located along Kentucky 9 in Mason County.
