FLEMINGSBURG — Kentucky 681 in Flemingsburg will be closed later this month as construction on a new bridge begins this month.

The construction project on Kentucky 681, also known as Buchannan Road, will demolish the existing bridge which crosses over Delaney Creek near Cowan.

A new structure will be built over the creek, and is scheduled to be reopened by the end of July.

Contractors expect to close the existing bridge on Kentucky 681 on May 20.

While the bridge replacement is underway, all traffic along Kentucky 681 will be detoured using Delaney Road, Kentucky 165, Mount Tabor Road and Wright Road.

According to the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet, this bridge project is being done under a $994,208 low bid transportation cabinet contract awarded to RGF Inc., under the Bridging Kentucky Program.

Bridging Kentucky is a statewide program that plans to rehabilitate or replace more than 1,000 bridges throughout the state.

The initiative plans to, over a six year period, “reopen closed bridges, remove weight restrictions that prevent use by school buses, emergency vehicles and businesses and improve access and mobility for all Kentuckians,” according to Kentucky Gov. Matt Bevin.

The KYTC goes on to say this program is one of the most aggressive bridge rehabilitation and replacement programs in the nation.

Over the first two years alone, the Bridging Kentucky team will begin working on nearly 400 bridges, officials said.
